A Dermatologist’s Perspective on Laser Hair Removal

Before & After

Before & After

By Dr. Valerie Tokarz

Laser hair removal isn’t exactly new science, but thanks to technology, there have been significant improvements in the world of laser medicine. As a dermatologist and laser expert, I can tell you why it works, the benefits, and what I can offer you as my patient (see below). It can reduce the irritation and bumps from razors (men: neck razor burn, women: everywhere!), you’ll save money on lifelong waxing or electrolysis, as well as reduce the use of disposable razors!

I’ve had lifelong problems with razor bumps in my bikini area and underarms. In my teens and 20s, I would avoid wearing sleeveless tops and cute swimsuit bottoms because of these unsightly bumps caused by shaving. Luckily, I chose a residency that excelled at all things laser and I of course made good use of that skill.  It’s been over 10 years since I’ve had laser hair removal and rarely do I have to shave those areas.  Best of all I no longer get unsightly razor bumps (even if you won’t ever see this 40-something in a cute bikini bottom anytime soon!).

LASER HAIR REMOVAL FACTS:

  • Lasers work by having a specific target. For hair removal, the target is pigment. No pigment = No laser effect on hair, thus it will NOT work on white/grey hair.

  • When the laser fires, the pigment in the hair acts as a “conducting wire” for the laser energy to transfer down to the level of stem cells.

  • Responses :

    • No more hair growth

    • Slow hair growth

    • Thinner hair growth

    • Significantly less irritation from shaving

  • 6 treatments (average) =  significant reduction

  • 20% improvement with each session
